Musk’s X Platform Adds X Money and Visa Debit Card

Elon Musk's X launches X Money with a Visa debit card, high-yield savings, cashback, and payments, advancing his vision of an all-in-one everything app.

X Money

Elon Musk’s X platform has stepped firmly into banking territory with the launch of X Money, a payment and savings service paired with its own Visa debit card. The rollout began for paying subscribers in the United States in late July 2026, marking one of the biggest changes to X’s business model since Musk bought the company. What makes this story worth watching is not just the new card itself, but what it signals: Musk wants X to become a one-stop app for talking, browsing, and now managing money. For millions of X users, this could change how they think about the platform entirely.

Interestingly, this idea is not new for Musk. Back in 1999, he founded a company called X.com, hoping to combine banking and online payments into a single account. That company eventually became PayPal after a merger, and the original banking vision was shelved for over two decades. X Money looks like Musk’s attempt to finally complete that unfinished idea, more than twenty years later, using the platform that carries the same name.

Rather than becoming a licensed bank itself, X is partnering behind the scenes with Cross River Bank, a New Jersey-based institution, to handle the actual banking work. This is a smart shortcut many fintech startups use, since getting an official bank charter is expensive and slow. By leaning on an established bank’s infrastructure, X can offer checking-style accounts and card services without waiting years for approval.

Access to X Money is currently limited. Only paying subscribers on X’s Premium or Premium+ plans can request an invite, with Premium+ costing around $40 a month. Once approved, users receive a sleek metal Visa debit card, personalized with their X handle, that can be used at ATMs worldwide with no foreign transaction fees. Inside the app, users can send money to other X members instantly, pay bills, send wire transfers, and even mail paper checks.

The financial perks are designed to stand out. X Money offers a 6 percent annual yield on deposits and 3 percent cashback on eligible purchases, numbers well above what most traditional banks currently pay their customers. To unlock the full interest rate, users generally need to deposit at least $1,000 and maintain their paid X subscription. Company leaders, including X Money head Dhruv Batura, have promoted these features as a reason for users to move their everyday banking onto the platform.

Safety has also been part of the pitch. Deposits made through X Money are held at Cross River Bank, which is a member of the FDIC, meaning balances are insured up to $250,000 per person under normal federal protections. Even so, X Money is stepping into a crowded market already ruled by well-known apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle. Analysts note that while Musk’s massive following on X gives the product built-in visibility, turning that attention into real, lasting customer trust in a financial product is a very different challenge.

Taken together, X Money represents Musk’s boldest push yet to turn X into an all-in-one “everything app,” blending social media with everyday banking. Reports suggest X has already secured money-transmitter licenses in dozens of U.S. states, hinting that a broader public rollout is likely on the way. Whether users will trust a social media company with their paychecks and savings, though, remains an open question that only time and wider adoption will answer.
