ChatGPT Free users are getting unlimited text chats, upgraded AI models, and smarter responses, while image, voice, and file limits remain.
OpenAI has announced a major change for people who use ChatGPT without paying. Free and Go tier users will soon be able to send unlimited text messages, with no daily caps. The company shared the news this week as ChatGPT continues to grow at a rapid pace. The update marks one of the biggest shifts in how OpenAI treats its free customers.
The change comes alongside a new default model for free accounts called GPT-5.6 Luna, which replaces the older GPT-5.5 Instant. This upgrade is meant to make responses more accurate and reliable for everyday questions. OpenAI says the new model performs noticeably better on tricky topics like legal, medical, and financial questions. The unlimited chat feature will roll out to Free and Go users starting next week.
While text chats are becoming unlimited, not everything is unrestricted. Limits will still apply to features like image generation, voice mode, and file uploads. OpenAI wants to keep those tools controlled, even as it opens up plain text conversations. The company also mentioned that guardrails will remain in place to prevent abuse of the new unlimited system.
Free and Go users are also getting a new tool called the “Think” button. This lets people ask ChatGPT to spend more time working through harder questions before giving an answer. It is designed for situations where a quick response might not be detailed enough. The feature is meant to give free users access to more thoughtful answers without needing a paid plan.
Paid subscribers are not being left out of this update either. Plus and Pro users are receiving an improved version of a model called GPT-5.6 Sol, built for daily tasks like research, writing, and planning. OpenAI says this version gives more focused answers and cuts down on unnecessary detail. A new slider also lets paid users control how much reasoning power ChatGPT applies to each response.
This update arrives as ChatGPT has crossed one billion weekly users, according to OpenAI. That scale puts pressure on the company to keep improving quality while managing costs. OpenAI says its internal testing showed a solid drop in factual errors compared to older models. However, these results come from the company’s own testing and have not yet been independently verified by outside researchers.
In short, OpenAI is removing text limits for free ChatGPT users while upgrading the models behind both free and paid tiers. The move could make ChatGPT more useful for everyday users who rely on the free version. Some limits will still apply to other features like images and voice chats. As the rollout continues over the coming week, users will get a clearer picture of how these changes affect their daily use of the app.
