Spotify to tag AI-made artist profiles with an "AI Persona" badge from mid-September, giving listeners more transparency about who they hear.
Spotify has announced a new label called the “AI Persona” badge. It will mark artist profiles that are built around an AI-generated identity rather than a real person. The badge will begin appearing in mid-September on Spotify’s app. This move matters because AI-made music has been growing fast on streaming platforms, and many listeners have felt confused or misled.
The new badge will show up in several places on the app. Listeners will see it on an artist’s profile banner, in the About section, in Search results, and on track rows inside playlists. Spotify said the goal is to make the label easy to notice no matter where a fan finds the artist. This way, users can quickly tell if the artist behind the music is a real person or not.
Spotify explained why it is making this change. The company said trust between artists and fans depends on honesty about who is really making the music. It said listeners do not like discovering that an artist they believed was human is actually an AI creation. Spotify called this kind of trust more important than ever because AI tools are now so common.
Artists themselves will have a say in the process. Starting August 11, artists can choose to label their own profile as an AI Persona through Spotify’s artist tools. Spotify said it will not rely only on artists being honest about this. Its review team will also check profiles that look like “photorealistic” AI-generated identities, even if the artist has not said anything.
Spotify will begin its review with the most popular artist profiles first. The company said this ensures the badge quickly reaches the profiles that most listeners actually visit. If an artist is labeled by Spotify’s review team rather than by their own choice, they will be notified. They will then have the chance to either confirm the label or appeal it if they believe it was applied by mistake.
The badge will also affect how AI music is promoted on the platform. By default, songs from AI Persona artists will not appear in Spotify’s official recommendations or algorithm-picked playlists. However, if a listener chooses to follow an AI Persona artist directly, that artist’s music can still show up in their personal feed. This step follows other actions Spotify has taken recently, including AI Credits, SongDNA, and a “Verified by Spotify” badge for human artists.
Spotify’s new AI Persona badge is part of a bigger industry push for more openness about AI in music. Record labels and music groups have also been asking for clearer rules on how AI-made songs are labeled and shared. As the badge rolls out in September, listeners will get a clearer picture of who is behind the music they stream. It remains to be seen how artists and fans will respond once the labels start appearing widely.
