GrapheneOS: Secure & private Android alternative. Open-source operating system with enhanced privacy features for mobile devices.
GrapheneOS is a privacy-focused, open-source mobile operating system based on Android, developed as a non-profit project. It enhances security through improvements to sandboxing, exploit mitigations, and the permission model, providing greater control over device security. GrapheneOS also includes its own hardened Chromium browser (Vanadium) and a minimal PDF viewer. Furthermore, it features hardware-based attestation for device verification and supports externally developed encrypted backups like Seedvault. The core focus is on strengthening both the OS and applications from the ground up by mitigating common vulnerabilities. While striving for seamless user experience with privacy features, GrapheneOS may require configuration adjustments for specific functions like network or sensor permissions, especially when locked. Importantly, GrapheneOS does not include Google Play Services or other Google services, prioritizing a secure and private Android experience without reliance on these components.
