Originally introduced in 2002 by Brent Simmons, the application offers customizable feed views, podcast management, synchronization across devices, and support for various feed formats including Bloglines and JSON Feed. Over time, NetNewsWire evolved, adding support for iPhone and iPad, before being acquired by NewsGator Technologies and later Black Pixel. In 2018, Black Pixel returned the intellectual property to Brent Simmons, who is currently developing a new version as an open-source Mac RSS reader (version 5.0).
