Thorium Reader is a free, open-source EPUB reader available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, designed with accessibility in mind for visually impaired or dyslexic users. Built by the European Digital Reading Lab (EDRLab), this application offers a modern interface for reading EPUB files, comics, audiobooks, and even LCP-protected PDFs, while ensuring user privacy through its ad-free and data-leak-proof design. Based on the Readium Desktop toolkit, Thorium Reader utilizes open-source components like Electron.js, Node.js, and TypeScript, with React components based on HTML 5/CSS 3 for a streamlined browsing experience. This desktop application fills a gap in the market by providing a fully accessible EPUB 3 reader compliant with standards, supporting screen readers like Jaws and NVDA on Windows, as well as Voice Over on Mac, enabling users to seamlessly navigate OPDS catalogs and enjoy large-screen reading.
